About this resource

Why we publish this, and who writes it

Rare Genetic is an editorial resource on the chain behind a lot of dried aromatic botanicals — from variety selection through to what a lot code resolves to. It is published by Rare Genetics, LLC, a limited liability company organised under the laws of the State of California, United States.

This is a publication, not a shop. Nothing is sold here, no order can be placed here, and nothing on this site is an offer. We are also not a farm and not a laboratory — the practices described here are those of the trade in general, not services we perform.

Why this exists

A certificate of analysis describes one sample, on one day, against the parameters someone chose to test. It is a necessary baseline and a poor predictor of the next lot. The questions that actually predict it are almost always the same ones: how fast it was dried, how long it was conditioned, at what water activity it was released, how old it is now, and whether the lot code on the pack resolves to a real record. They are easier to answer once, properly and in public, than one conversation at a time.

Worked examples run through the guide rather than sitting in a list: the house varieties Toad Venom and Uncle Snoop, and the cross Animal Face x Sin Mintz, are used to show what a named designation has to resolve to before it means anything. So the site is written as a reference rather than a catalogue. The position behind it is a simple one: quality is a property of a process, not of a batch. A good batch can happen by luck; a good tenth batch cannot. Adjectives about a lot are worth exactly as much as the numbers behind them — a water activity reading with the temperature it was taken at, a pack date rather than a season, and a lot code that resolves to an actual record rather than to nothing.

What we publish, and what we do not

Everything here is descriptive: why variety selection and a controlled growing environment are repeatability tools rather than luxuries, how input quality sets the ceiling, why the aromatic fraction sits where handling is most likely to remove it, how drying rate governs what survives, what the conditioning phase does while it appears to be doing nothing, how water activity is measured and how it is used as a release gate, why elapsed time competes with storage quality, how packaging decides shelf life, and what a lot code has to resolve to.

We publish no medical, health or lifestyle claims of any kind. We do not describe, recommend or encourage any end use of any material, and we do not give guidance on the selection or preparation of any material. Any figures used in the writing are conventional operating ranges cited as illustration, not readings from any particular batch.

Who it is written for

The resource is intended for professional readers aged 21 and over.

Corrections

If something here is wrong, out of date, or reads as more certain than the evidence supports, tell us and we will correct it. Handling practice and the standards behind it change, and a reference that is not maintained stops being a reference.
